TO MY READERS…

With some sadness I’m announcing that I will no longer be adding to this blog.  The world has changed rather drastically since spring 2020, affecting all of us is so many different ways.  I will certainly continue photographing.  For now, just a quiet “thanks for reading.”

    Dear John,
Ever since I first saw your pictures in the German magazine “fotografie draußen” when I was a teenager, your name has stood for the best classic nature photography.
Decades later, I was pleased to read about your views on photographic topics in your blog from time to time. Your farewell to this publication makes me a little melancholic.
Yes, a lot has changed since the spring of 2020 – but we should always be aware that the love of nature and the enthusiasm for photography are two elements that strongly connect many people on this planet – because at their core they are humanistic values.Truth, art, nature conservation and often pure passion.
    Best regards from Germany,
    stay healthy and creative
    Stephan

I understand, but I am also sad. You are one of the few photographers I have admired for a long time. Thank you for an enormous collection of timeless photographs and informative books.

I can understand and totally agree. I retired last spring and hope to pick up my photography a bit. I’ve read your books since the film days and they’re priceless. Thanks for all the info and inspiration.

I have been a big fan since I read your first book, it made perfect sense and it inspired me to observe and photograph the natural world around me, something that I still do to this day and I thank you so much for that. and all the subsequent books.

Your books were a tremendous inspiration in my decision to leave a high stress career and pursue nature photography on a full time basis for which I will be forever grateful. “Closeups in Nature” stands out as one of my favorites.
I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Perhaps another book or two…..??

The world has changed and so have we. I so enjoyed your common sense blogs over the past few years and remember the old Houghton Lake workshop a few decades back. One thing tat seems to comfort some of us is getting out in nature and concentrating on the beauty around us. Take care.

Thanks for all your wonderful photos and all your informative books and writings. I’ve been a fan since I read your first book in the mid-80s. Good luck in the future.

After following your work in the late 70’s, when I started photography, I attended a 2 day workshop in Pontiac, MI that you & Larry along with a stock photo agency put on. That was about 40 years ago and a tremendous moment in my photo life. I was very late to the digital world and all these years later your e-book on Lightroom was another huge help. Whenever I have a conversation about nature photography I can’t help but mention John Shaw and what a talent and inspiration to follow.
    Many thanks and happy trails.

John, I think I speak for many, including innumerable admirers of your work who may never have picked up a camera, in expressing the transcendent effect you have had on our awareness and appreciation of the natural world. Your photographs have not just elicited powerful emotional responses to an exquisitely varied range of subjects, but have bequeathed us with an invaluable catalog of Earth’s fragile, often ephemeral treasures. For those lucky enough to have attended one of your workshops, you elevated the enjoyment of taking pictures to a level we could never have imagined. Speaking personally, I can never overstate how much I learned from you on such subjects as optics, natural history, and several places in the world I had hitherto known nothing about but then yearned to see for myself (and did). The copious notes I took from three workshops, as well as numerous tape recordings I made during those wonderful “classroom” sessions, remain cherished resources to this day. Along with your books, of course. I thank you for these gifts, and wish you all the best.

I owe all my technical skills in photography, to you. Your books were instrumental in laying a solid foundation for my workflow, whether with the camera in the field, or with the digital files and LR/PS in post. I fondly remember our meeting during the 2011 weekend seminar in Santa Clara, CA.

Thank you very much. All the very best for your future.

Hello John, really sorry to hear this news. Ger and I were actually thinking about doing another workshop with you next year. Hard to believe it was 2006 when we did the Patagonia workshop with you. As you may recall us saying, your photography (through your images, books and workshop) have helped immensely to enhance our photography and life. I still remember the wet night in Vancouver when I first came across your books in a wonderful bookshop and life has never been the same again. Your amazing books still remain photography bibles for us. Really hope we get an opportunity to meet somewhere and have a coffee/Jameson. Wishing you all the best for the future and thank you soooo much again for the immense contribution you have made to our life. Ash & Ger (Ireland)

I wish you all the best John. You have been an inspiration from the day I seriously began my photography journey. I will always be grateful for that. Enjoy each and every day my friend. In the words of good ‘ol Walt Whitman; “Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you.”

For 35 years, your work and teachings have exerted a profound influence on my photography and, by extension, on my life. My life would have been poorer but for you. Thank you is all I know to say. I wish you peace and fulfillment.

    Dear John,
When I started my photography hobby back in 1989, my experienced friend gave me a book and He told me that this is the source which I should learn from.
This book which includes clear explanation in photography topics and wonderful pictures, gave me great knowledge and exceptional experience in photography.
This book name is “Nature Photographer’s Complete Guide to Professional Field Techniques” by John Shaw.
During the years I purchased all of your books, they are in my personal library and are the best I have. I proud to say that you are the best teacher I had in photography.
I’m following your site in many years and read your blog constantly. I was really sad to read that you stop blogging.
I would like to thank you for the precious images and explanations you shared with your students in such remarkable and generous way.
I wish you well and all the best.
